Luke James Walker, age 101, of Haleyville entered into rest on Monday, April 30, 2012 at Lakeland Community Hospital.

He was born on February 17, 1911 in Moreland Community, Winston County, Alabama. Mr. Walker served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, participating in the African campaign and the Italian occupation near the end of the war. He was retired from the U.S. Forest Service. He was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church since 1946, serving in numerous capacities at the church, including deacon, song leader and Sunday school teacher. He loved gardening, photography and gospel music singings.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 12:30-2:00 pm at Nichols Funeral Home in Double Springs, where services will be held at 2pm. Burial will be in Winston Memorial Cemetery in Haleyville. Brother Irvin Smith and Vance Hutton will be officiating.

He is survived by his brothers, Dimp (Myrl) Walker, J.B. (Lavonia) Walker; sisters, IV Farley, Jean (Gene) Skaggs; special nephew, Tim Mayhall; special nieces, Lora Lane, Jean Wallace, Martha Mayhall, Deborah Phillips, Karen Pearson, and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Vera Lee Whitman Walker; parents, Willie and Mamie Pair Walker; brother, Palmer Walker; sisters, Winnie Mae Walker Ellenburg, Estell Walker, Edna Walker, Bertha Lee Walker Thomas, Dorothy Dean Walker; and a special nephew, Mike Mayhall.
