Seth was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted as a Private in Company Batty E, Rhode Island Co E 1st Light Artillery Battery on 30 Sep 1861 and was mustered out on Oct. 3, 1864 at Providence, RI.

Seth was the sixth of nine children born to Artemas Darling, b. Apr. 21, 1807 in Mendon, Worcester Co., Ma. and d. Apr. 19, 1861 in Providence, RI & Laurinda Taft, b. Feb. 14, 1802 in Mendon, Worcester Co., Ma. and d. May 28, 1881 in Providence, RI. of 'brain disease'.

Artemas and Laurinda (Taft) Darling's children were:
1) Idelia Taft, b. Oct. 14, 1828 in Mendon and d. Sept. 10, 1829 in Mendon.
2) Caroline Idelia, b. May 18, 1830 in Mendon, Ma. and d. May 18, 1831 in Mendon. She marr. Edward A. Luther.
3) Mary Sophia, b. Jan. 28, 1833 in Mendon and d. 1910. She marr. Edward A. Luther on Oct. 15, 1855.
4) Nancy Jane, b. Apr. 22, 1835 in Mendon and d. Aug. 11, 1836 in Mendon.
5) Artemas Amasa, b. May 27, 1836 in Mendon.
6) Seth Benson, b. Jan. 21, 1838 in Mendon and d. Sept. 15, 1868 in Taunton, Ma.
7) Edward Everett, b. Oct. 30, 1839 in Mendon
8) Moses Oscar, b. Aug. 7, 1841 in Mendon and d. Feb. 5, 1891. Moses was a burnisher. He was also a Civil War veteran.
9) Daniel Webster, b. Nov. 25, 1847 in Halifax, Plymouth Co., Ma. and Dec. 21, 1930 in Providence, RI.

Seth married Orinda M. Sweet, age 28, a daughter of Leander Sweet, on Nov. 16, 1865 in Attleboro, Ma.

Seth died less than three years later.
