Captain LaVoo was a member of the Marine Attack Fighter Squadron 542, Marine Attack Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing. On September 19, 1968, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phanton II Fighter (F-4B) on a combat mission about 20 miles south of Dong Hoi, Quang Binh Province North Vietnam. As the aircraft made its pass 6 miles west of Xuan Bo it was struck by anti-aircraft fire and crashed into the countryside. His remains were recovered on August 4, 1994 and identified on May 19, 1999. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial
