He was with the Yankees until the middle of the 1953 season, when he was traded to the Washington Senators. Over the winter of 1953, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox for the 1954 season. He spent six more seasons there, winning the 1958 American League Most Valuable Player Award after batting .286 with 35 home runs and 122 runs batted in. He retired before the 1960 season, largely because of an intense fear of flying at a time when air travel was increasing among major league teams. In 1984, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2000.
