Roy was born to Carl and Grace (Rae) Hanson in the family home near Potlatch. He started school at Fairview, near the Cocking farm south of Farmington, and shortly after that the family relocated to a farm near LaDow Butte between Garfield and Palouse. Roy attended Garfield School and graduated from high school in 1947. He attended Whitworth College in Spokane for one year on a football scholarship.

Roy worked for several farmers in the Garfield area from the age of 13, including Herb Hemmingway, Sally Schroetlin and Warren Love.

In 1950, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served for nearly two years in Austria. While in the Army he received training as an automobile mechanic. Following discharge, he returned to the Garfield area and worked for Bagott Motors in Palouse.

In 1962, he purchased Central Garage in Garfield from Ralph Akin and Wix Walters. He operated the auto repair shop for 33 years before retiring in 1995. He moved to LaDow Court Assisted Living in Garfield in January of this year.

Roy married Betty Perkins in April 1958, and the couple made their home in Garfield, where they raised their three children, Tammy, Teri and Tim. Betty passed away in April 1980.
