7 Squadron’s Short Stirling I (#W7467) aircraft, with an aircrew of eight, took off from RAF Oakington on a training flight. W7467 collided in mid-air with 56 OTU’s Hawker Hurricane I (V6865), resulting in both aircraft crashing north of Earith Bridge in Cambridgeshire and taking the lives of the nine airmen.

There is a Memorial dedicated to W7467 of 7 RAF Squadron, erected in 1999, near the crash site in the village of Earith in Cambridgeshire; the memorial also remembers and honours the Hurricane pilot, Pilot Officer Browne.
