GIRARD WOMAN IS DEAD AT 95.
In the death of Mrs. Elizabeth McGinnis, which occurred at 6:10 o’clock Sunday morning at her home, Girard has lost its oldest citizen at the age of 95 years and 16 days.
Elizabeth McGinnis, whose maiden name was Crump, was born in Nicholas county, Kentucky, February 15, 1819, and came to Illinois with her parents in the fall of 1830, where they settled in Morgan county. Mrs. McGinnis had a most vivid recollection of the first winter she spent in Illinois, which she terms “the winter of the deep snow.”
After a few years’ residence in Morgan county the family moved to North Otter township in Macoupin county, and here on December 31, 1843, she was united in marriage to Gideon L. McGinnis. In North Otter they enjoyed a continuous residence of fifty-two years, coming to this city in 1895.
Mr. and Mrs. McGinnis had 139 direct descendants living. The death of Mrs. McGinnis today is the second broken link in the family circle, the death of the husband and father occurring June 10, 1912, at the age of 92 years. The decendant [sic] is survived by three sons and six daughters: James W. and Martin, of Modesto, William, of Girard, Mrs. Mary Alderson and Mrs. Lucinda Hammond, both of Girard; Mrs. Louisa Nevin, of Porter, Minn., Mrs. Francis Johnston, of Staunton, Mrs. Martha Sullivan, of Juniata, Neb., and Mrs. Jennette Roberts, of St. Louis, Mo. Besides these are forty-eight grandchildren, seventy-nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. McGinnis united with the M. E. church in 1853, later transferring her membership to the Baptist church, where she continued faithful in attendance until prevented by the infirmities of age.
The funeral services were held at Union chapel at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. Will England. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.
