GARRIET HARMS
MONTICELLO….Funeral services for Garriet Harms, 89, were held Wednesday afternoon, Nov 16 at St. Matthew Lutheran church. The Rev. Anton Kirkegaard conducted the services. Burial was in the Oakwood cemetery.
Mr. Harms died suddenly Sunday morning at his home of cardiac failure. He was born Dec. 3, 1876 at Weisde, Ostfriesland, Germany, the son of Ben and Gesche Wolken Harms. He came to the United States when he was 17 years old.
On Sept 16, 1909, he married Hilke Janssen, who died in March 1911. They were the parents of one daughter. On March 14, 1912 he married Elise Schlemmer in Monticello.
The couple farmed near Monticello, with the exception of 1916 to 1936 when they farmed in Minnesota. In 1941 they retired, and had lived in Monticello for the past three years
He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran church.
Survivors include his wife, Elise; four daughters, Mrs. Henry (Catherine) Folkers of Scotch Grove, Mrs. Leo (Laura) Ambuehl, Mrs. Nicholas (Iona) Kremer, and Mrs. LaVern (Elaine) Buol, all of Monticello; and 32 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sons, Henry G., John, Garriet, and Harvey, and five daughters, Amy Ulferts, Berdina Steuri, Berniece Delaney, Beverly Wolf and Lena Harms.
Pallbearers were Harm Bunting, John Bunting, Carl Wolken, William Wolken, Edward Janssen and John Janssen, Jr.
