Jesse R. Bechtel, 90, formerly of Oley, died August 19, 2014 in Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania surrounded by his loving family.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he was the husband of Catherine (Eshbach) Bechtel, with whom he just celebrated 70 years of marriage in April.

Born in New Berlinville, he was a son of the late Henry B. and Mary (Reiter) Becthel.

Jesse was a graduate of Boyertown High School.

He was employed as a truck driver with William R. Gift for 31 years, retiring in 1988.

Jesse served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He was an active member of Boyertown Mennonite Church where he served as an elder. He also served there as a superintendent for Sunday School for 9 years and a teacher for many years. He was a member of PA State Sunday School Association, Berks County Sunday School Association, where he also served as President for 9 years.

Jesse enjoyed woodworking in his wood shop.

A very generous man, Jesse loved visiting shut-ins and the ill and having prayer and Bible readings with them.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his four children: Elaine, wife of Larry Shirk of Lancaster, David, husband of Janis Bechtel of Stroudsburg; Glenn, husband of Sharon Bechtel of Oley; and Bruce, husband of Debra Bechtel of Boyertown.

Also surviving are his two sisters, Mary Schueck of Barto and Sarah Forsythe of Harleysville.

There are also 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren surviving.

Jesse was predeceased by his two brothers, Phillip Bechtel and Thomas Bechtel and his sister, Naomi Mest.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Boyertown Mennonite Church, 275 Mill Street, Boyertown, PA 19512. Viewings will be held Friday evening from 6-8 in the church and Saturday morning from 9-11 in the church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Boyertown Mennonite Church at the above address.
