A fellow Darvel villager, Nicol Smith, (no relation) convinced Rangers to give Alex a trial in a friendly game towards the end of the 1893/94 season. He was signed up and played for Rangers for 21 years.
His last match was in October 1914 and he retired at the end of that season, returning to his native Darvel, to work in a lace-making business in which he was a partner.
