He was 20-11 with a 2.75 ERA as the Red Sox breezed to the 1946 American League pennant. He pitched well in Game 1 of the World Series against St. Louis, giving up seven hits and two runs in eight innings. He got no decision as Boston won 3-2 in 10 innings. He took the loss in Game 4 when he was shelled for five hits and six runs in two innings. He pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief in Game 6, but the Cards won 4-1. He was named to the AL All-Star team in 1942 (he did not play), in 1943 (he gave up two runs in three innings to close the AL's 5-3 win) and in 1944 (he was the losing pitcher as the National League scored four times in the fifth for a 7-1 victory). Hughson's lifetime record was 96-54 with a fine 2.94 ERA.
