Mrs. Smith, 81, was a retired interior decorator who owned and operated Margaret Smith Interiors in Bethesda for 20 years from 1966 to 1986.
She was born in New York City, but grew up in Chevy Chase and was a lifelong resident of the Washington D. C. area.
She was a graduate of the Sidwell Friends School class of 1935, Lasell Junior College in Auburndale, MA, and the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.
She was survived by a son, Randolph Philip Smith of Richmond; a sister, Alice Mendenhall of Palo Alto, CA; four nephews and three nieces.
Her husband, James Arthur Smith, died in 1996.
