James Arthur Smith. 78, of Naples, died Wednesday, May 29, 1996 of congestive heart failure in his home in Chevy Chase, Md.
Mr. Smith was a lawyer who practiced in Washington, D.C. and Virginia for more than 35 years as a member of a family law firm started by his father in 1924. Upon Mr. Smith's retirement in 1981, he moved to his winter home in Naples while maintaining a second home in Chevy Chase, Md.
Mr. Smith graduated from the University of Virginia undergraduate and law schools and George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C.
During World War II, he served with the Army Air Force in the India, Burma and China theaters, leaving the service as a major in the Adjudant General's Department attached to the Air Force.
Memberships included the American, District of Columbia and Virginia Bar Associations, the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati, the Royal Poinciana Golf Club, the Chevy Chase Club and the Metropolitan Club of Washington, D.C.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Mendenhall Smith; a son, Randolph Philip Smith, Richmond, Va.; and two brothers, Allen Carol Smith of Littleton, Colo. and John Philip Smith of Bethesda, Md.
