US Congressman. He was born in Turkey Cove, Virginia. At a young age he served in the Virginia Legislature at Richmond,Virginia. When his father Campbell Slemp Sr., died in office in 1907, C. Basom Slemp was elected to complete the unexpired term of his father in Congress. C. Bascom was a U.S. Representative from Virginia 9th District, 1907-23; delegate to Republican National Convention from Virginia, 1916, 1924, 1928, 1932; member of Republican National Committee from Virginia, 1924. In 1929 he purchased property in Big Stone Gap, which he eventually turned it into the Southwest Virginia Museum. From 1930-1932, he served as Commissioner General for the Paris Exposition.
