Leroy Truman Burnham was born on 12 November 1886 in Guthrie County, Iowa. He joined his parents, William Nelson and Emily Jane (Robertson) Burnham, and older siblings, Joseph Albert, Ethel Ella, James Clement, and Grace in the family's home. His mother gave birth to two more sons, Ora Harrison and William Jr. before she and William Sr. decided the family was large enough.
Prior to Leroy's birth, the family had moved around a bit as evidenced by Joseph's birth in Kansas, Ethel and James' births in Oregon, and Grace's birth in Idaho. Once settled in Iowa though, that is where they remained. Leroy grew up there and sometime after the turn of the century he met Cora May Ewing. They were married in Decatur County on 24 August 1904. Soon after they moved to Missouri and set a pattern of spending time between Missouri and Iowa until about 1919 when they settled permanently in Saint Joseph, Missouri.
Roy and May as they preferred to be called by friends and family, had six children. Their first two, Leroy Clyde and Corrine Edna were born in Missouri. The next was born in Iowa, Ivan Eugene. Back in Missouri again they had Raymond Earl and Gail Ewing. Perhaps it was wishful thinking on May's part (hoping for another girl) that she spelled her son's name Gail on his birth certificate. After the family settled in Saint Joseph they had their final child, namesake Leroy Truman Jr. Sadly he developed pneumonia and passed away at just two and half years old.
Roy worked as a laborer while May kept house. They raised their family and were blessed to see their adult children marry and have families of their own. They lost their son, Gale (he changed the spelling to the masculine form) in 1960. While his immediate cause of death was heart related, a contributing factor was the shrapnel he carried inside him from World War II. Two years later May died leaving Roy alone. When Roy passed in 1967, he was laid to rest next to May in the Mount Auburn Cemetery.
