MOUNT VERNON, KENTUCKY — Franklin Wayne "Lafe" Pheanis, 77, formerly of Preble County, died July 19 at his home in Mount Vernon, Kentucky.
He was born July 9, 1937, in West Alexandria, to the late Isaac M. and Alma Ann (Henemyre) Pheanis. He attended school in Camden, where he met his wife, the former Betty Buckley. They were married Aug. 2, 1958. He was a veteran of the Air Force, where he served as an Air Police Officer, that included a tour of duty in Germany. He enjoyed his duties which included training guard dogs and motorcycle patrols in the countryside. After retirement he moved he moved to Mount Vernon, where he enjoyed raising animals, mowing, mushroom hunting and being the best neighbor he could be. He was proud to be a blood donor for several years.
Lafe is survived by his wife Betty, and their six children: Debbie of Ocala, Florida; Rusty of West Alexandria; Tom of Fargo, North Dakota; Billie of Phoenix, Arizona; Penny of Eaton and Herb of Mount Vernon, Kentucky. He also had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings Bob, Paul, Kenny, John and Joan. He was preceded n death by his parents brothers Donald and Lowell, and sister Permillia.
Lafe donated his remains to the University of Kentucky for study, then cremation afterwards. His ashes will be taken by his sons to Boyne Mountain, Michigan, to be spread where he loved to hunt mushrooms.
A celebration of his life was held in Mount Vernon with family and neighbors, and other friends. Several commented on Lafe being "one of a kind."
