ABERDEEN – Fred T. Smith was born on February 15, 1930, at home in rural Aberdeen, Monroe County, to Eulis S. Smith Sr. and Ada McWhirter Smith. He was born from above in the waters of Holy Baptism in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens, Ga., on January 1, 1957, Pastor Richard P. Deffner officiating.

Fred graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1948. He joined the U.S. Air Force soon after and began his 28-year career serving his country. He loved his country and was stationed all over the U.S. as well as in Korea, Vietnam, Okinawa and Taiwan. Fred was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, retiring in 1976 as a senior master sergeant.

Fred was joined in marriage to Lorine (Lucy) Maria Wilke in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit on June 1, 1953, at Welcome-Salem Lutheran Church, Welcome, Texas, the Rev. Walter Wolf officiating. They were blessed with over 61 years of marriage, with eight children, 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The Fred and Lucy Smith family took up permanent residence in Aberdeen in 1974. Fred was a cattleman, also working for the State of Mississippi as a certified meat inspector until he retired in 1993. He loved his large family with all the grandchildren and lived just long enough to see his last grandson, Thomas-Brunson Smith, born July 9, 2014. He enjoyed traveling to be with family, and was especially fond of visits to Texas. Fred was cared for in his home by his beloved Lucy since being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Fred is survived by his dear wife, Lucy; their sons, Norman Wayne Smith (Gail) of rural Aberdeen and Thomas Franklin Smith (Adrian Anne) of Aberdeen; their daughters, Patricia Gail Smith of Smithville, Debra Lynn Olson (Thomas) of Columbus, N.C., Linda Jean Cullum (Dac) of Amory, Nancy Marie Tucker (Mark) of Humble, Texas, Dorothy Diane Mayhall (Bill) of Aurora, Colo., and Sarah Lee Land (Spencer) of Longview, Texas. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren with one on the way. He is survived by sisters, Hazel Kitchens (and Charles), Louise Hanson (and James Hal), Mildred Allen (and Phillip) and Anita Jean Boyd (and John).

Fred was preceded in death by brothers, Eulis S. Smith Jr. and wife, Anita, and John D. Smith (Mabel Howell survives); and by sister, Clara Smallwood and husband, John; also brother-in-law, Daniel Wilke (Nelda survives).

A faithful Christian and member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Columbus, a beloved husband and father, Fred loved Christ Jesus and His Church. He spent all his days at home in the loving care of his family. On the eleventh day of August in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen, Fred fell asleep in Jesus at the age of 84 years, six months and 27 days when his soul was carried by Christ's angels into the eternal presence of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. with visitation today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Tisdale Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen, the Reverend Mark Steiner of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Columbus, officiating. His body will rest in New Prospect Cemetery until the resurrection of all flesh.
