Obituary - Rev John W. Lee
Rev. John W. Lee was born in Franklin County, Kentucky, eighty-one years ago. His father, Joseph Lee, was one of he oldest residents, having migrated from Virginia to the above county. John W, Lee was converted when quite young and was baptized the 12th of August 1833 into the fellowship of old Northfork church. Later on his father moved to Owen county and the family, who were members of the baptist church, the united with Pleasant View church by letter, were he was afterwords ordained to the gospel ministry. He devoted his whole time to the ministry, believing in a Divine call. He lived respected, and died regretted by all, It is not necessary to say in the columns of the Independent that he was a successful preacher. Most all of the oldest citizens of Gallatin, Grant, Owen, Boone and Pendleton counties can readily recall "The revival in the days of the preaching of John Lee". For nearly twenty years of the close of is life he was unable to be in the pulpit. Having had such demands and calls for meetings, and he never was the man to say "no". Day and night, winter and summer, far and near he was in search for lost souls for whom his Master died. He was perhaps the most successful minister of his time. God had blessed him with wonderful facilities, His preaching was plain, simple and practical, He certainly had an enduement of the spirit. He held a great many protracted meetings. perhaps the greatest meeting that was ever held in Northern Kentucky e held with old Mussels Shoals church, when 101 persons were baptized. Great meetings were also held by him at Ten Mile church, Mt. Zion church, Oakland and Clarks Creek. He as the instrument in God's hands of gathering and organizing many churches. He was a number of years the Moderator of Ten Mill Association. His work was not limited to Kentucky alone. He did great work for his Master in Missouri. It can be said of him "He being dead yet speaketh, After serving his own generation by the will of God, he fell a sleep. And now he rests from his labors and his works do follow him" He died March 15th, in the full triumph of the faith, leaving his wife, two daughters, and one brother, together with a host of friends and acquaintances. It being his request, his nephew, Rev. J. A. Lee, of Covington, pastor of the Third Church, conducted his funeral in the presence of a large number of friends and neighbors, after which his remains were laid to rest in the family burying ground on the farm to await the summons of Him, Who is the resurrection and the life. Thus closed the earthly pilgrimage of one who was both good and great.
