Attached is a photo of three grave markers from the Riverview cemetery that I, Wendy McCartney, took in 2011.

I believe it to be the burial place for Laurence Shultz, who was born in 1739 and died in 1827.

Information to support my claim was found in a 1932 Sons of American Revolution Membership Application by Edwin Lafayette Mattern born 10 August 1869. Mr. Mattern was the grandson of David and Christina Shultz and the great grandson of Laurence Shultz.

This is most likely Laurence Shultz' stone in the middle with possibly a brother Philip on the left and likely another family member on the right, possibly his wife Maria Catherine Hollinger. The middle and right stones are impossible to read but we know he is buried here in the Riverview Cemetery and that he was a Revolutionary War Soldier and that he had a son Philip. Did he also have a brother Philip? I ask this because the stone for Philip J Shultz (1747-1819) is directly to the left of Laurence's stone.

We also know that his grave was visited by descendant Edwin Lafayette Mattern who writes in 1932 that in regards to Laurence Shultz "The dates of birth and death are derived from his gravestone in Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon County, Pa. It bears the marker also placed there by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution of which my sister is a member." Note, that the photo of this particular stone still holds such a marker from the Standing Stone Chapter D.A.R. in this 2011 photo.

Mr. Mattern provides us with Laurence Shultz birth in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany in 1739 and his death in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania in 1827. He provides us with Laurence Shultz wife's name as Catharine Hollinger and that she died in 1826. Other sources indicate that her name is Maria Catherine Hollinger and like her husband, also born in Germany.

My research indicates that Laurence Shultz was in the Revolutionary War under the name "Lorentz Shultz" and that he was a Private of 7th Class in North Guard, In Captain Henry Kessler's Company of Associators and Militia for York County. Source: PA Archives, Series 6, Vol. II, pages 534, 708 & 709

In the spring of 1794, the Shultz family moved from Mill Creek, Huntingdon County to Huntingdon, Huntingdon County. Source: Daughter Christina's Obituary from the 30 Aug 1871 Huntingdon Journal.

This information was compiled by descendant Wendy (Pollock) McCartney on August 10, 2014.
