MICHELLE DENISE SHAW was born April 4, 1968 to Geraldine Kennedy and Sylvester Shaw in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was known for her vibrant personality and her unselfish desire to help others. More importantly, Michelle was a devoted Christian and faithful servant of God.
James Wheeler and Geraldine Kennedy met in 1970 in Philadelphia and married in 1977 in Fairbanks, Alaska where Michelle lived with her beloved mother and father from 1976 to 1979. Michelle loved her time in Alaska and especially loved the outdoors, animals and reading. Michelle returned to Philadelphia in 1979 where she met her lifelong friend, Joy (Caldwell) Carpenter. Michelle and Joy graduated from the High School of Engineering and Science in 1986.
Michelle was always an outstanding student, completing her Bachelor’s degree from Temple University in 1990. she held various positions with Americorps from 1995 to 1997, which altered her career path. In 1997 Michelle began a Master of Education program (Technology) at Rosemont College. She began a second Master of Education program (Elementary Education) at Cheyney University in 1999. Michelle completed both programs attaining a 3.8 GPA at Rosemont and a 4.00 GPA at Cheyney.
On May 9, 1995, Michelle and Ricardo Dallas embraced the birth of their daughter, Joie Riquelle Dallas-Shaw. Michelle was a loving and devoted mother. Although challenged by Sickle Cell Disease from birth, she tirelessly worked to instill in Joi her love for life, education and her duty to God. Michelle believed that her life was truly blessed with Joi as her daughter.
Michelle’s faith was very important to her. Michelle was baptized at Pinn Memorial Church and was a loyal member from 1993 - 2005. For over eleven years, Michelle has been a Board member, newsletter chair and integral part of God’s Christian Women Inc., a ministry encouraging women to walk by faith and not by sight. Reverend Dr. Jacob L. Chatman recognized Michelle in February 2005 for her dedicated service to her church. Michelle recently joined the Resurrection Community Methodist Church, in which she completed a spiritual retreat on November 20, 2005, a day before her Homegoing to God.
Michelle was a dedicated volunteer in the area of sickle cell awareness. Michelle served as a Junior/Senior counselor at the Robin J. Spicer-Camp Love. In addition, she committed her efforts to the annual Walter E. Brandon Sickle Cell Walk a Thon Committee year after year. Michelle was also a member of Project Self Care, Sickle Cell Disease Association, Philadelphia/DE Valley Chapter.
Michelle was currently fulfilling her passion for teaching. She was teaching 3rd grade class at Blakenburg Elementary School. She was a vibrant, innovative educator who brought out the best in each of her students.
Michelle is survived by: her loving mother, Geraldine Kennedy; her beloved father, James Wheeler; her blessed daughter, Joi Dallas-Shaw; uncles, Hassan Farid and Karim Muhammad; her great-aunt, Sadie Valentine; aunts, Rosemary Robinson-Jervay, Nancy “Drew” Spears and Marlene Hafeeza Muhammad; siblings, Vynesha Johnson, James Wheeler, Jr., Andre Johnson, Jaymee Wheeler, Kimberly Moore and Nicole Moore; cousins, Deidra Viney, Malena Farid, Zaid Farid, Benjamin Robinson, Vernon Wheeler, George Slaughter, Sharonda Spears and Veronica Spears; sister-friends, Joy Carpenter, Tonya Murphy and Tracey Darden; and numerous other relatives and friends.
