OBITUARY:
The Decatur Herald 12 Nov. 1953
Victim of Kentucky Auto Crash Believed Marsh, Kidnap Figure

Clinton, KY. Nov. 11
A penniless hitchhiker killed in an automobile collision apparently was Thomas John Marsh, whose name figured in the Greenlease kidnaping case.
The victim went under the name of Billy Stars of Mexico, MO., but his identification tallied almost exactly with that of the ex-convict once named as the killer of Bobby Greanlease.
The exception was this: Marsh's name was tattooed on his right forearm. On star' right forearm an old tattoo had been obscured by a fresh one.
The FBI hoped to establish positive identification today through fingerprints. Stars was killed Saturday night near Clinton. Later an unidentified woman telephoned a funeral home, inquired about tattoo marks on the body and expressed belief that Stars and Marsh were the same.
When Carl Austin Hall, 34, was arrested for the kidnaping of Bobby Greenlease at Kansas City, he declared Marsh killed the boy. Later, he exonerated Marsh. He confessed that he and Mrs. Bonnie Brown Heady, 41, kidnaped the 6 year old son of a millionaire Kansas City auto dealer, killed him and collected a $600,000 ransom.
State Police Lt. James Mason said the Clinton wreck victim carried a wallet identifying him as Billy Stars, 45. Paycheck stubs indicated Stars had worked for a carnival and a Houston, Tex, construction company.
The state policeman listed identifying marks as an amputation of the left ring finger, a tattoo on the left forearm, birthmark on the left side, and a knife wound on the right wrist. Mason said Stars' age, weight and height corresponded to those listed for Marsh.
The man identified as Stars was killed in a two car collision. Officers said he was a hitchhiker in a car driven by Ike Evans of Clinton. The driver of the other car, Tolar Griggs, 78, Rockford, Ill., also was killed.
Check stubs issued in the name of Billy Stars, Mexico, Mo., were found in Stars' pocket. Officials at Mexico, Mo., which is only 12 miles from Marsh's hometown, said no one named Billy Stars had lived there.
Star's body had not been claimed by relatives today. His face was crushed in the head-on collision.
(other obits indicate that Tolar's car was driven by a chauffeur, and included his wife and sister-in-law from Florida. Also that Starr had been imprisioned for child molestation before being pardoned in 1951.)
