The son of James & Cynthia B. (Johnson) Noble, in 1860 he was a telegraph operator living in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had black hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Cumberland County May 8, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC May 28 as a private with Co. H, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (36th Pennsylvania Infantry). Captured at the battle of Charles City Crossroads June 30, 1862, he was incarcerated at Richmond, Virginia, and paroled at Aikens Landing August 5, 1862. Captured again at the battle of the Wilderness (specifically at Locust Grove) on May 5, 1864, he was incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia, and later transferred to the stockade at Florence, South Carolina. Paroled at Savannah, George on November 30, 1864, he honorably discharged the service to date January 19, 1865. He later served with the U.S. Navy, dates unknown.

He married Sarah A. Gudtridge December 4, 1881, in Dayton, Ohio, but they had no children. Sarah died in 1900, and he married divorcée Wilhelmina Kluever September 12, 1901, in Dayton, but they had purchased the marriage license the previous July.

He may have a cenotaph in Old Graveyard in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
