Louise H. Baird, 91, of Boise City died Sunday, Febraury 19, 2006.
Devoted wife, loving mother, and doting Gramie, Louise H. Baird departed her earthly confines Sunday evening February 19, 2006, to join her lord and savior, Jesus Christ.
Louise was born october 2, 1914 at Kenton, Oklahoma in the rock house that her Papa built. Her parents Katie and Ed Eddleman had four children: Clara, Reuben, Louise, and Allie. Ed was also step-father to Kate's four older children whose father had died. They were: Elsie, Ann, Joe and Fred Kohler.
Louise was only 7 years old when her Papa died, leaving Katie with 7 children to feed, cattle and chickens to care for and a ranch to pay off. Elsie had married and moved away.
Everyone had to pitch in and help with all the chores. Louise and little sister Allie, had the job of getting to the school early to get a fire going to warm up the school room by the time the other children arrived. They walked a half-mile to school carrying "cow chips" from home to get the coal fire started. They had to empty the ashes each day and fill the water reservoir on the stove, also. For this early-morning job the little girls earned $15.00 a month. On Saturdays Katie's girls made ice cream to sell. Katie had a daily egg, milk and cream route and the children also helped with that on Saturdays.
Louise atternded school in Kenton through her junior high school. She graduated from Boise City, however, as the high schools consolidated into Cimarron County High School.
After graduation a couple who knew her mama asked if Louies could go with them to Pond Creek where they operated a restaurant. She was given permission and began waiting tables for room and board plus a salary.
During this time, a very handsome, dapper, young man came into eat and took a "shine" to Louise. He was the "love of her life"-Glen Baird! They were married in Clayton, New Mexico on May 18, 1940. They decided to make Boise City their home and operated the B&D Supply in 1944.
Glen and Louise were blessed with two sons: Larry and Johnie. Louise was a stay-at-home mom (typical of the day) when the boys were in school. She was the first den mother of the chartered chapter of cub scouts in Boise City. She was very active here in the First Baptist Church and served in many capacities. She was very active in Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron. She was a member of the Delphinium Garden Club. She was very community-minded and worked tirelessly promoting the the county fair (and was proud of the ribbons she earned for her needlework, flowers, and jellies). Louise felt honored when she was chosen to be the 2003 Santa Fe Trail Daze Queen.
After Larry and Johnie married and were out of college Louise begain working part-time at the B&D Supply. She was Glen's helpmate there and then for several years helped Johnie and Sandra until she finally decided to retire at the age of 83.
She enjoyed her home, yard work and some travels for several years. When it became evident that it was physically dangerous to live alone, she chose to leave her home and she moved into Cimarron Memorial Nursing Home.
Louise loved her family and they were her priority. She welcomed Glen's son Ronald Spitler, into their family and daughter-in-laws Barbara and Sandra. As the three sons' families grew her joy increased.
She leaves behind: son, Larry and his wife Barbara of Jenks, Oklahoma; son, Johnie and his wife Sandra of Boise City, Oklahoma; step-son, Ronnie and his wife Chris of Scottsdale, Arizona. Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren, Valerie Baird-Brown and sons, Andrew and Thomas of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brett and Kelly Baird and son, Matt of Wichita, Kansas, Tim and Candi Baird and sons, Tyler and Travis of Boise City, Oklahoma, Todd and Krista Baird and sons, Tanner and Trenton of Spearman, Texas, Terri Spitler-Shurtleff and daughters Kristie and Katie of Wichita, Kansas, Rick and Amy Spitler and children, Ryan, Lexie and Abby of Hutchinson, Kansas, Rona and Todd Fitzmeir and sons, Blake and Jake of Sparks, Nevada, and Doug Spitler of McPherson, Kansas. One sister, Ann Miller of Boise City, Oklahoma, many neices and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be Wednsday, Frbruary 22, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Boise City, Oklahoma with Derek Cox, officiating. Interment will be in the Boise City Cemetery. The family has suggested memorials to the Cimarron Nursing Home, they may be left in care of the moutuary. Services by Cimarron Mortuary, Box 277, Boise City, Oklahoma 73933.
