In Mitchell, Indiana, August 22, 1899 Emily Kelly Bates, wife of Jacob Y. Bates, aged 72 years, 5 months and 5 days. She was born in Bono, March 17, 1827 and married to Jacob Y. Bates, May 27, 1851. She was a good, Christian women, loved and respected by all who knew her. For some years she has not been in robust health but was always cheerful and uncomplaining. She leaves besides her sorrowing husband, two sisters: Mrs. Allen Edwards and Mrs. David Kelley and also three grandchildren, who are the children of a deceased daughter and I.N. Glover of Bedford. The funeral services were held August 23rd, at the Presbyterian church of which Mrs. Bates had been a member for many years and were conducted by her pastor Rev. G.W. Applegate. The body was laid to rest in the Bates family vault in Mitchell cemetery. The pall bearers were: M.N. Moore, J.H. Crawford, D.J. Mavity, M.A. Burton, Dr. W.A. Burton and W.M. James.
