AVOCA –– Kenneth Eggerss was born to William and Minnie (Burmeister) Eggerss in Avoca on August 20, 1928. He graduated from Avoca High School, where he was a versatile athlete and a member of the band. When Ken was just sixteen, the school district entrusted him with driving the first Avoca school bus, and during his teen years he also operated the projector at the local theater. Following graduation he worked for LaVerne Kaven Construction, helping to build many homes in Avoca, and later managed Avoca’s Fullerton Lumber Company. Later in his career he sold bulk cement for Missouri Portland Cement Company, traveling throughout Iowa and Nebraska calling on ready mix customers and also worked for Hundt Appliance and Heating in Shelby. He came full circle when he went back to drive the school bus for the A-H-S-T School System.

Ken was married to Dorothy Allen on December 30, 1948 at the First Lutheran Church in Avoca. To this union three children were born: Marty, Linda and Patti.

September 17, 1977, Ken married Darlene Williams Jergens at the Shepard of Valley Lutheran Church in West Des Moines. They lived in Waukee, briefly, then moved back to Avoca. With this union he undertook the task of helping raise four teenagers: Darla, Regina, Scott and Donna. Ken was active on the Avoca City Council, Park Board, and Avoca Fire Department for twenty-five years. He was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on the Church Council and teaching Sunday School. Also, he was part of the Iowa High-School Athletic Association for over thirty-five years. Always an athlete, he officiated hundreds of football, basketball, baseball and softball games for over thirty-five years. Ken enjoyed going to coffee with his buddies, golfing, dancing, attending all sporting events, and playing cards. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and quick wit. He was a resident of Avoca Nursing and Rehab for two years and seven months. He died on Thursday, August 7, 2014 having attained the age of eighty-five years, eleven months, and eighteen days.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Patti Eggerss, father-in-law Donald Williams, brother-in-law Norwyn Williams, and sister-in-law Dolores Ferguson. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Darlene Eggerss of Avoca; son Marty Eggerss and his wife Carol of Woodbury, MN; step-son Scott Jergens of Avoca; daughter Linda Eggerss of Omaha, NE; step-daughters: Darla and her husband Chris Jensen of Des Moines, Regina and her husband David Hayes of Aurora, IL, and Donna and her husband Dean Schueman of Avoca; six grandchildren: Jamie Eggerss, Kelly Eggerss, Danny Schueman, Dana and her husband to be Collin Sowers, Tyler Jensen and his wife Adrianna, and Ryan Hayes; one great-grandson Isaac Jensen; mother-in-law Wyona Williams, brothers-in-law Dean Williams and his wife Phyllis and Bob Ferguson and his friend Caroline; sister-in-law Jean Williams; other relatives and friends.

Pastor Eric Meissner officiated the 10:00 a.m. funeral service on Monday, August 11, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. Music was provided by Shirley Pattee and Ryan Hayes. Honorary casket bearers were Dale Petersen, Bernie Mann, Keith Robinson, and Dave Niemann. Serving as casket bearers were Dave Larson, Tom True, Roger Benson, Don Nelsen, Jim Wharton, Kurt Pattee, and Farrell Zimmerman. Burial was held at Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.
