Darrell Gene Norton passed away Aug. 4, 2014.

Gene was born July 23, 1928, in Shamrock to the late Eugen Norton and Pearl Hensley Norton.

Gene the youngest of eight children moved to Shawnee in 1930.

He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1946 and joined the Air Force later that year. After serving 18 months, Gene returned to Shawnee.

He married the love of his life Dorothy Chambers on Sept. 21, 1947, in Romulus. They were married over 66 years at the time of her death earlier this year. The two of them were inseparable and faithful companions.

Gene was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Shawnee and served first as a Deacon then an Elder for over 40 years and taught various classes over the years.

After returning from the Air Force, Gene went to work for the Shawnee News-Star as a printer; he worked as the Advertising Manager for the last 13 years of his career.

Gene loved OU football, and for the love of his wife he kept his comments to himself when they played Mom's team the OSU Cowboys. He enjoyed playing golf, gardening, wood working and various other hobbies. Most of all he relished his time with Dorothy. At Mom's funeral a friend whispered to Dad "it gets better." For Dad it didn't; he truly died of a broken heart.

He is survived by three sons, Timothy Norton of Shawnee, Ted Norton of San Francisco, California, Terry and Sherry Norton of Huntsville, Texas, nine grandchildren, their spouses and 10 great-grandchildren: Nami, Caleb, Penelope, Sawyer and Lola Belle Stone (Texas), Tim Jr. Norton (Oklahoma), Courtney, Brandon and Cierra Morgan (California), Constance, Jeff, Cadence and Liam Reidinger (Arizona), Natalie Norton (California), Taysha, Bill, Taylynn and Taycie Hatfield (Georgia), Taron, Tara, Trevin and Trista Norton (Texas), Sarah and Todd Rondinelli (Texas), and Calley Hollon (Texas), his only surviving sibling-sister Lola Mullinax of Shawnee, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a blessing in this life and will be missed by all. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at Fairview Cemetery.
