1842 he was licensed by Presbytery of Ayr and became Ordained and Assistant at Lauder in 1843. 1843 he became Minister of Sorn, (formerly Dalgain)and a moderator of the General Assembly in 1883.
John married Jane Simson (Abt 1820, Melsea, Roxburghshire, - 21 Dec 1879) on the 29th Apr 1845 at Sorn, Ayrshire, Scotland. Jane was the daughter of Charles Simson, of Threepwood.
