Information taken from obituary - John M. Grant, Noted Botanist, Passes Away-
Probable division between the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Washington of the rare botanical collection left by John M. Grant, 84 years old, Washington pioneer and botanist, was revealed today by his daughter, Mrs. William Sanders, 308 E. Republican St. Mr. Grant died Sunday at his home, north of Marysville, after a long illness.
Mr. Grant, who had spent many years studying botany, had several lichens and mosses found in Washington named after him in honor of his work with the native flora. He had gathered and exchanged specimans with collectors and universities throughout the world. He was also listed in a pamphlet printed by the British Museum naming the leading botanists in the world.
Mr. Grant was born in Ohio of Revolutionary stock. Before coming to Washington in 1877, he lived in Nebraska, where he carried mail through the danger zone during the time of the Platte Indian uprising.
Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Serena J. Grant; three sons, Leslie of Lake Stevens, Lloyd of Langley, Verne of Marysville; two daughters, Mrs. Sanders and Mrs. Charles Reid of Seattle; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Burial took place in Everett.
