He was the son of William & Margaret Burnett of Scotland. As a "stillman" for Standard Oil Company of Bayonne, he was overtaken by gas fumes at the facility, and drowned at age 33 yrs,1 mo. He married Dec. 21, 1893 in New Brunswick, NJ, Elizabeth Ross daughter of Alexander Ross and Sarah Montgomery. The three children who survived his death were William, George and James Burnett. Elizabeth Ross Burnett married second, Joseph J. Sloat on October 4, 1902.
