Margery A. Maravetz, 78, of Waterloo, died Jan. 28, 2008, at her home of cancer. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Locke Funeral Home (233-6138) in Waterloo. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls.

She was born Jan. 19, 1930, in Osage to Lela Stewart McGill and Elmer McGill. She married Marvin Maravetz on Oct. 16, 1948, in Osage. They had five children, Steven (Dixie Collins) of Mount Vernon, David (Kathy) of Gardiner, Mont., Mary Jo of Albuquerque, N.M., Laurie Dewey (Greg) of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and William (Dianne) of Waterloo.

Like many others of her generation, she lived through hard times and learned to work hard and persevere. She was raised by a single parent during the Depression and left before graduating high school. After her children were grown, she completed her GED, of which she was very proud.

Throughout her life, she wanted her children and grandchildren to have educational advantages she had not. She taught all of her children to read before entering kindergarten and had high expectations for them in school. When their children were small, she and her husband scrimped on luxuries to buy books to have in their home.

In 1969, she was one of the first women in Black Hawk County to join Alcoholics Anonymous. For 39 years, she set an example for the community and for her family on how to achieve and maintain sobriety. Many people have led happier lives because of the role model she provided.

She worked as a receptionist at McKenna Color Lab until her retirement in 1993. Following her retirement, she was a volunteer for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and worked with Exceptional Persons Inc.

She was a loving mother and doted on her grandchildren, whose pictures cover her refrigerator, her tables and her walls.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Marvin and Robert McGill; and sister, Harriett Mendelson. She is survived by her husband; her sister, Mary Hartwig of Osage; her children; her grandchildren, Alex and Emily Maravetz of Waterloo, Lela Dewey of Yellow Springs, Heather Collins of Lafayette, Colo., Aaron Collins of Mount Vernon, Willa Mullen of Laramie, Wyo., and Katya Hafich of Albuquerque; and her great-grandsons, Owen and Devon Hamm of Lafayette.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to City of Hope Cancer Center in Los Angeles and Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo.
