Mr. Laughlin, a native of Pittsburgh, was a descendant of a founder of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, where he worked and became a director. He was a graduate of St. Paul's School and of Princeton in 1912.
In World war I he was a captain in the 315th Infantry, 79th Division. A collector of pewter, he was the author of “Pewter in America” (1940) and other publications in the field.
Surviving are his wife, the former Roberta Howe; four sons — Leighton,. James, the Rev. Ledlie I. Jr. and Robert; a brother, Henry A.; and 11 grandchildren.
