Born in Halesowen (then in Worcestershire) England, in 'The Black Country' to Joseph Hodgetts and Susannah Hodgetts (nee Hutton). He was a glass worker; immigrated in 1885, buying a 64 acre farm in the hills of Somerset County, NJ where he bred horses. He married his wife Amplias in NJ after her immigration, and they had three daughters. Harry was murdered on his farm when the youngest child was an infant.
