Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church, Streator. The Rev. Dustin Schultz will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at Solon-Telford Funeral Home. The rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m.
Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Levi Reeder, Zach, and Alex Gayon; nephew, Mark Gayon and longtime friends, John Soltis and Dave Wilkinson. Third degree members of the Monsignor George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council 790 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Born Dec. 27, 1939 in Streator, he was the son of Rudolph "Rudy" and Helen (Salata) Gayon. He married Judy Alderman on May 27, 1961 at St. Stephen's Church. She survives.
He is also survived by three sons, Jeff (Kitty) Gayon of Keller, Tx, Rick Gayon and Chris (Michelle) Gayon both of Streator; his mother Helen Gayon of Streator; and grandchildren Levi Reeder, Katie, Zach, Anna and Alex Gayon.
He was preceded in death by his father, and brother Robert Gayon.
Born and raised in Streator he attended St. Stephen's Grade school and Woodland High School. He also attended Northern Illinois University.
After his schooling he played semi professional baseball for several teams including the Streator Reds. He also played in the Washington Senators minor league system for a time.
He worked as a pipefitter out of the Union Local 81 which is now 597.
He was a life member of the former St. Stephen Church and belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Parish. He was a third degree member of the monsignor. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council 790.
Dick was an avid sports fan. He was a diehard Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers Fan. He was active in youth sports serving on the board of Streator Youth Baseball and Streator Youth Football. He also served as past president for Streator Youth Football. In his time on the board for football they accomplished many goals including the new goalposts, installing the sprinkler system and resodding of the field. He coached basketball for many years at St. Stephen school.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be truly missed by his family.
