Gabe was born on the family farm near Fallon, ND on February 11, 1925 to Gabriel and Kathryn (Dinius) Schmidt. He attended a rural school in Morton County before joining the Civilian Conservation Corps. He returned home and married Ottilia Fleck on February 21, 1944 in St. Anthony, ND. Gabe and Tillie farmed on his family's homestead until 1973 when they moved to Mandan. Gabe then began working as a cement finisher and later worked in maintenance at the ND State Capitol.

Gabe was a soft spoken, good hearted person with a strong faith. He was a loving family man who attended all important events in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted usher at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan for nearly 40 years. Gabe was a past member of the Knights of Columbus and a longtime member of the Mandan Eagles and St. Anthony Verein.

During their 65 year marriage, Gabe and Tillie were always on the go visiting friends and relatives, playing pinochle, traveling, or attending dances where they skillfully danced many polkas and waltzes over the years. Gabe had a great appetite and loved to make homemade sausage and enjoy the delicious German meals Tillie prepared.

Grateful to have shared his life are his daughters, Linda (Curt) Zearley and Cynthia (Ken) Haff; son Jerry (Laurie) Schmidt; Nine grandchildren, Jana, Jared, and Jon Schmidt, Joy (Dustin) Landeis, Jodi (Chuck) Stevens, Ryan and Ross Zearley, Biana (Bob) Smolich, and Beth (Nathan) Kroh; six great-grandchildren, Aidan, Anna, Avery, Autumn, Eli, Levi, and another on the way in October.

Gabe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Tillie; sisters, Monica, Mary, Kathryn, Rose, infant sisters, Anna and Theresa; brothers, Jacob, John, Peter, Paul and infant brothers, Paul and Albert.
