PORTAGE -- Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hobart Assembly of God Church for Marcus P. Gaines, 75, of Portage, who died Sunday, Aug. 20, 1989, at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.
He was born April 3, 1914, in Leonard, Mo., a son of Lowell and Ruby (Kuhn) Gaines.
Mr. Gaines was a member of Faith Assembly of God in Lake Station. He was retired from Plant Protection at Inland Steel with 42 years of service. He was a self-employed concrete contractor operating Gaines Construction in Portage for 35 years.
On Dec. 22, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he married Mildred I. Boyles, who preceded him in death Sept. 24, 1978. On June 15, 1979, in Lake Station, he married Shirley Heavilin Evans, who survives.
Also surviving are six sons, Ronald, Archie and Clifford of Valparaiso, David and Samuel of Portage, and Daniel of Tennessee; four daughters, Patricia Dean of Florida, Linda Price of Angola, Ruth Ayers of Louisiana and Esther Powers of Portage; four brothers, Darrell and Lonnie of Valparaiso, Leland of Arizona, and Everett "Junior" of Tennessee; two stepsons, David Evans of Chesterton and Jeffrey Evans of California; four stepdaughters, Donna McCutcheon of Valparaiso, Laura Dodson of Alaska, Debra Evans of Lake Station and Diana Evans of Gary; 31 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.
Revs. Gordon E. Falconer, Bruce W. Washam and D. L. Baker will officiate at the services; interment in Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso; visitation 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at Engel Funeral Home in Portage.
