Bill was awarded the Doctor Of Medicine degree in 1958 by the University Of Tennessee following completion, with distinction, of his formal medical studies. Prior to graduation, he and Marilyn Moser were married on April 22, 1957. Their family includes Alex, Anita and her husband Scott, Alan and his wife Jeanne, Andrew and his wife Laura, and grandsons Nathan and Nicholas.
Dr. W. E. Rawls served as a captain in the United States military, posted in Korea as a medical officer from 1959 through 1961. During the years 1964 to 1974, Bill taught and conducted research at Baylor University in Houston, Texas. He joined the Department of Pathology at McMaster University in 1974. He was the Director of the Molecular Virology and Immunology Programme from 1984, was the founder and, for over 10 years, Coordinator of the McMaster Cancer Research Group, served the National Cancer Institute for many years on grant panels, on the Board of Directors, and as President of the NCI. He will be greatly missed as a scientist, teacher, and friend.
Friends and family have established the W.E. Rawls Memorial Scholarship Fund for graduate and post-doctoral studies in Bill's area of mission and research, molecular virology and immunology.
