US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Virginia's 6th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1972 until 1983. During his first term in Congress, Butler made the historic decision in favor of impeaching President Nixon as a result of the Watergate scandal. Born into a family of historical figures, he was a descendant of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall, he was the great-grandson of Confederate Brigadier General James Alexander Walker. He served with the United States Navy during World War II and upon his return home, he attained his degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. After years of practicing Law privately, Butler was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates and served from 1962 until 1971.
