Zina May Butterfield Phelps was born July 16, 1881 to Jacob Kemp Butterfield & Sarah Hayes Butterfield, in Taylorsville, Utah. She was the 12th child in a family of thirteen. Her brothers & sisters were: Sarah Jane, George Henry, Lydia Ann, William Wellington, Olive Jane, Albert Jacob, Franklin Abel, Asa Kemp, Elizabeth Elvie, David Ensign, Andrew Dodd, and Rhoda Rosella. Her father was a polygamist with three other wives so she also had an abundance of half brothers and sisters. Her parents crossed the plains with one of the handcart companies and settled in Taylorsville, Utah. Her father was also in the Black Hawk War and in the Mormon Battalion. He died when Zina was just 8 years old. Zina May was baptized November 7, 1889 in the LDS Church. Zina's mother wanted her to marry a fellow who was more active in the Church than George Frederick Phelps, but they were in love and were married on December 16, 1896. She was only 16 years old, and he was 24. He was only 5' 2" tall and wore a 61/2 shoe. They made their home in Salt Lake for 2 years and then moved to Taylorsville where they stayed for 19 years. They became the parents of 11 Children; Frederick Leo, Rosella May, Clyde Burdette, Gladys Alberta, Wilford Everett, Merle Zina, Vera Elizabeth, Ruth Foster, Orval Kemp, Ila Fay, and George Newell. Her husband helped run a pig farm with is brother Andrew, until the pigs got cholera and died. They decided to move to a farm in Bluffdale and lived in a tent until the house was built. They were so poor in Bluffdale, because of the depression, and with so many children, they were barely able to make ends meet. George worked at the U S Smelter and Refinery in Midvale, Utah. The farm failed them in 1932. There was no water for the farm crops and everything was dry. They moved to Midvale, Utah. Merle moved in with them because she was widowed and had two boys 2 & 3, Dean and Billy. It broke Zina's heart to leave the farm and she never quite adjusted. She died Jun 24,1938, and is buried in the Midvale Cemetery, Midvale, Utah.
