Bio. and Research Notes of
Martha Jane (Schliesser) Hicks:

My fourth great grandmother, Elizabeth (Hohenschild) Shumaker was the oldest of seven children born to her parents, Johann Georg, Jr., and Anna Maria (Koder) Hochenschild/Hohenschild. She was born in Plainfield Township and was baptized at Plainfield Reformed (Saint Peter's) Church, which is in the borough of Wind Gap.

Elizabeth married Jonas Shumaker in 1814. They had ten children, five sons and five daughters: (1) Hanna, (2) Johannes, (3) Unnamed daughter who died in infancy, (4) Jonas Jr., (5) Daniel, (6) Jacob, (7) Joseph, (8) Catherine, (9) Susanna, and (10) Sarah Shumaker. About 1836, the family moved from Wayne County, Ohio, to the southern part of Polk Township, Crawford County, Ohio, settling in or near the town of Galion. Elizabeth died there at age 61.

There are various spellings of her maiden name (including Hochenshield, Hohenshield, Hohenschild, Hohenshell, Hohenshel, and Hoenshel). Church records for her family commonly spelled it "Hohenschild," as shown on her baptismal record, but the surname was passed down as "Hohenshell" and "Hoenshell."

She was originally buried at Old Union Green Cemetery where Galion Senior High School was later built. Her grave was moved to Fairview Cemetery.
