Ray Eugene Brewer was born in Catlettsburg, Boyd, Kentucky, the son of Harlan Brewer (1900-1951) and Ruby Mae Bennet (1902-1987). He was the oldest of nine children. His siblings were Roy (1924-1924) Rannie (1926-2007), Nina (living), Alva Lee (1932-2007), Ines (living), Frances (living), Lola (living), and Carolyn (living).
He married Frances Alean Sumner in Saint Louis, Missouri on October 10, 1942. They had six children: Ray Ann Brewer Breneman (1943-1994), Bonnie Jean Brewer Camp (1946-1970), Jo Ella Brewer Kristler (living), Harlan M. Brewer (living), Mark Douglas Brewer (1955-2015), and Melissa K. Brewer Black (living).
He died at Good Samaritan Hospital, Vincennes, Knox, Indiana.
