Mary was born in Whitesboro, Texas, to the late Alton Brooks and Ada Bernice (Barnes) Emmons. She received her B.S. Degree at East Texas State University and did graduate studies at the University of Texas and East Texas State University. She was an elementary school teacher and had taught at Clear Creek, Gilmer, and Harmony Independent School Districts.
On January 28, 1956, she married John Herman Henry. In February of 1976, Mary and John moved their family from Gilmer to College Station where John worked with the Texas A&M Extension Service. Mary and John became members of First Baptist Church in College Station, where she was a member of the Discovery Sunday School Class and a sponsor for International Students. They helped establish and were charter members of Parkway Baptist Church. Mary taught children's and youth Sunday School Class.
Mary loved to travel, especially taking cruises. She enjoyed playing dominoes (42), teaching her granddaughters the game and bridge. She volunteered at the George Bush Presidential Library. Mary loved going tailgating and to Aggie football games with her family. She would share great pride telling friends, "We are four generations of Aggies".
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Henry; and a brother, Lt. Col. Bobby Emmons.
Survivors include her sons, John M. Henry and wife, Diane, and Scott Henry and wife, Leslie; daughter, Maribeth Appleby and husband, Allen; granddaughters: Jill English and husband, Brad, Chelsea Reeder and husband, Alex, Morgan Henry, Laura Henry, and Amanda Henry; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Kinley English; sister, Ada Jones; and her Sheltie named Hallee.
