Caroline deTreville was the daughter of Robert L. deTreville and Sarah McKee Ellis deTreville. She never married and spent most of her life in Beaufort, SC, until forced to flee at the beginning of the Civil War, after which she spent the remainder of her life in Charleston. In Charleston, she was a member of the First Baptist Church and at the time of her death was one of the church's oldest members (Two Centuries of the First Baptist Church, p274).
