Myra Vivian Barr Wilson, age 97, a lifelong resident of Pike County, Alabama, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2021. A private family graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery, in Brundidge.
Mrs. Wilson was born in the Enon Community. As a young girl she and her family moved to Brundidge, where her parents owned and operated the Guy Barr Store. She studied at Pike County High School and graduated in the Class of 1942. She furthered her studies at Troy Teachers College completing her bachelor's degree in 1945. She found placement as a teacher with the Montgomery County Schools in Ramer from 1945-46. On August 30, 1947, she earned her master's degree in education from Auburn University and married the love of her life on the same day.
After receiving her masters, Mrs. Wilson returned to familiar surroundings and planted roots as a teacher with the Banks School. For nearly eight years, she was a vibrant fixture, instructing the best PE challenges, and motivating the boys' basketball and baseball teams as head coach. In 1955, she secured a position at Pike County High School where she went on to serve as senior sponsor and teach government, economics, and American history until her retirement in 1987. Throughout her tenure, Mrs. Wilson impressed upon countless lives, fostering an exciting environment for learning and evoking concepts and thoughts well beyond the bounds. Her work did not go unnoticed either. She was named to the Alabama Teachers Hall of Fame in 1974, and served as a distinguished member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International organization.
Outside of nurturing the young minds in her community, Mrs. Wilson stayed involved through her membership with the AEA, Daughters of the American Revolution, Brundidge Homemakers Club, and various other organizations. She was a longtime member of Salem Baptist Church, in Brundidge.
Following retirement, her love of learning continued. When she wasn't spending time with her family, she especially loved the opportunity to explore the world of which she spent so much time teaching. Always making new friends and collecting thimbles along the way. Countless hours were spent working on her passion which was researching and recording genealogy. She could often be found reading a good book, taking painting classes, or eating her favorite chocolate frosty. Her love was big and her blackboard full. There's no telling what she's teaching the angels right now.
