Helen Beryl Davis
April 12, 1925 - July 23, 2014

Cumberland, MD--
"Beautiful children are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art." - Eleanor Roosevelt. Cumberland, MD - Helen Beryl (nee Chapman) Davis, 89, of Cumberland, MD, was marked present with the Lord on Wednesday, July 23, 2014.
Helen passed away at her home surrounded by her daughter, a home care provider, Carolyn Warner, and a home care nurse, Dottie Sterling who had cared for Helen for four years. Helen was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2006. She was 89 years old.
Helen follows her husband of 69 years, Harold Watson Davis in death, March 1, 2004.
She is survived by her daughter: Carolyn Lee Davis, Cumberland, MD; her son: William (Liam) Hillery Davis; and a grandson: Karlson Stansberry, Cumberland, MD. Helen had one brother, Ronald Edward Chapman, deceased, and is survived by her sister-in-law: Ruth (nee Schade) Chapman, Cumberland, MD. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins scattered through the country.
Both Helen's grandfathers were coal miners at George's Creek in Allegany County.
Helen is the daughter of the late William Henry Chapman (boy coal miner) and Lucy Caroline Cooper. They eloped to Ohio. Helen was born in Akron, OH, and joked about being a native "buckeye" all her life.
Soon after Helen's birth, the newly formed Chapman family moved back to Cumberland, MD.
During World War II, Helen graduated from Allegany High School and began nurse's training at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, MD.
While at Memorial Hospital, she met her future husband Harold, on leave from the Navy and visiting his sister, Margaret Malone, a patient who introduced the two. After a period of home-on-leave romances, they eloped and were secretly married in Winchester, VA.
Helen worked over 40 years at Memorial Hospital as a surgical nurse. After retirement, she volunteered in the surgery ward and counseled breast cancer surgical patients in the recovery room after surgery. Helen was a member of the New Covenant United Methodist Church, the American Legion's Women's Auxiliary, and the Order of the Easter Star.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Sunday, July 27, 2014, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and from 7:00 P.M., to 9:00 P.M. The Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a service at 7:30 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, July 28, 2014, at 10:00 A.M., with Reverend Dr. Chris Gobrecht officiating.

Helen's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the community that supported and loved her through the eight years of her disease. For eight years, the Adult Day Care Centers of Cumberland provided Helen with professional skilled and loving care daily.
The family will never forget the lovely people who worked at the Western Maryland Day Care Center, the Covenant House, and the HRDC Willow Creek. The staff and all the care providers at Pro Care Home Health Care were angels of mercy that tended to the care of Helen for four years. A special thanks to Maria Smith, her friend, who worked with Helen every day of those eight years by either phone or visitation. Lee Ann Stickley gave time and emotional support to the family. Warm thanks to Dr. Ranjithan and Dawn Wolford and staff for their constant care and vigilance. Lastly, the family feels that all of the people touching Helen created for her a beautiful life of dignity, loved and respect. "Do not Ask me to Remember - Do not ask me to remember, do not try to make me understand, Le me rest and know you are with me. Kiss my cheek and hold my hand. I am Confused beyond your concept, I am sad and sick and lost. All I know is that I need you to be with me at all cost. Do not lose your patience with me, do not scold, curse, or cry. I cannot help the way I am acting, Cannot not be different though I try. Just remember that I need you, that the best of me is gone, please do not fail to stand beside me, Love me till my life is done." - Author Unknown.
