She grew up in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence Oread High School in 1930 when children walked to school. Her walk one way was equal to 36 holes on a golf course.
Fern married Jesse James Carney on May 3 1930 in Topeka. She was a floral designer for both Owens Flower shop and Bill Nye in Lawrence for 40 years. She and Jesse operated Duck's Restaurant in the 1950's and a Pillsbury Feed Store, both in Lawrence. Plus, they operated a small farm in Jefferson County for many years.
She is survived by her two daughters and two sons. Fern will be missed by her loving family and many friends.
