Dean attended Jordan High School and was employed as an apprentice machinist for the D. & R. G. W. railroad two weeks prior to entering the US Army in 1943. He was trained at Fort Ord and sent to the Hawaiian and Marianas Islands and died on Saipan at the age of 19.
