The son of James & Hannah Jane (Chamberlin) Linn, in 1860 he was a farmer presumably living in or near Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 10" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg February 1, 1864, and mustered into federal service there February 3 as a private with Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa). Contracting a severe case of dysentery, he was furloughed home to recover but died from the wasting effects of that disease.
