Mrs. Eunice Alma Rakes Bowman, age 86 of Meadows of Dan, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Laurel Meadows Nursing Home in Laurel Fork. She was born in Dublin on January 13, 1928 to the late Harry Cleveland Rakes and Geneva Joy Vipperman Rakes. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bowman was preceded in death by her husband, Vesta Odell Bowman; one son, Arnold Dale Bowman; one daughter, Rita Joy Bowman; three brothers, Lloyd, Oscar and Roy Rakes; and one sister, Nellie Rakes Hooker. She was a member of Reed Island Springs Baptist Church.
Mrs. Bowman is survived by six children, Vesta Wayne Bowman of Bluefield, West Virginia, Steve Allen Bowman and wife, Peggy of Laurel Fork, Kathy Joyce Litwin, Randy Leo Bowman and wife, Katie, and Gary Dean Bowman, all of Meadows of Dan, and Gloria Jean Pickett and husband, Randy of Pulaski; sixteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Charlie David Rakes of Pembroke; and two sisters, Margie Gier of Laurel Fork and Ruby Keith of Chesterfield.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Pickett officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnard-Terry Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. If desired, memorials may be made to Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, 2511 Jeb Stuart Hwy., Meadows of Dan, Virginia 24120.
