Mr. Smith died Saturday at the Whitman Community hospital in Colfax. He was born on Aug. 25, 1882, in Latah county, Idaho. He was the son of Samuel M. Smith and Zeralda (Jamison) Smith. He attended Cedar Creek Country school, graduated from Moscow High school, and attended the University of Idaho from 1903 to 1905. As the oldest surviving member of its football players, Mr. Smith was the guest of honor three years ago when the University of Idaho observed the 100th anniversary of football. He served as Grand Marshal of a parade in downtown Moscow.
He married Zora Brenneman on March 9, 1910, and they farmed in the Cedar Creek District east of Garfield until his retirement several years ago. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1960.
Mr. Smith was the past president of the Latah County Pioneers Association.
Survivors are his wife, at the home; four sons, Franklin and Al Smith, both of Garfield; Chester Smith of Seattle; Paul Smith of Spokane; two daughters, Loretta Passic of Seattle and Jessie Cook of Spokane; 25 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Kimball Funeral Home, Palouse, is handling the arrangements. The family suggests that memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church.
