Clara was the daugher of Brittish imports Samuel Medbourn and Ann Wilford, who married in 1848. I found nine children for them--Mary A. (b.1850), Dorcas (b.1853), Lola E. (or Sarah) (b.1855), Emma (b.1857), Celia (b.1858), George Edward (b.1860), Joseph W. (b.1862), Benjamin (b.1864), and Clara (b.1867).

After daughter Mary's birth, the family sailed from Liverpool to New York, arriving in 1852. They first settled in Amherst, Lorain Co., Ohio, where they appeared on the 1860 Census, their surname written as "Milburn". Samuel, aged 38, was farming for a living. Ann, aged 31, was home with the six children--Mary, aged 10, Dorcas, aged 7, Lola, aged 5, Emma, aged 3, Celia, aged 2, and Edward, aged 5 months.

Sometime between Edward's birth in February of 1860 and Joseph's birth in 1862, the family relocated to Culver, Union Township, Marshall County, Indiana, where they were in 1870, their surname written as "Medbern". Samuel, aged 48, was busy farming. Ann, aged 41, would have had her hands full in a house filled with nine children--Mary, aged 21, Dorcas, aged 17, Sarah, aged 15, Emma, aged 13, Celia, aged 12, George, aged 10, Joseph, aged 8, Benjamin, aged 6, and Clara, aged 3.

They were still in the Culver area when the 1880 Census was enumerated. Samuel, aged 58, was still actively farming. Ann, aged 51, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were Celia, aged 22, George, aged 20, Joseph, aged 18, Benjamin, aged 15, and Clara, aged 13.

On 11 Oct 1891, Clara married Henry D. Haag in Marshall County. They would share the joy of bringing seven children into the world--Roy Raynald "Ray" (b.1892), Ruth E. (b.1894), Henry H. (b.1896), Carl C. (b.1898), Grace I. (b.1900), Edith (b.1902) and Earnest (b.1906).

I found the family on the 1900 Census, living in Union Township, Fulton County, Indiana. Henry, aged 31, was earning a living as a tinner. Clara, aged 33, reported that she had had five children, and that all had survived to that census. Home with her were Ray, aged 8, Ruth, aged 6, Henry, aged 4, Carl, aged 2, and Grace, aged 2 months.

The family was still living in Union Township when the 1910 Census was enumerated. Henry, aged 41, was still working as a tinner. Clara, aged 43, reported that she had had seven children, and that all seven were still alive. Keeping her hands busy at home were Ruth, aged 16, Henry Jr., aged 14, Carl, aged 12, Grace, aged 10, Edith, aged 8, and Earnest, aged 4. Eldest son Ray, aged 19, had run away to join the circus. Ray's uncle Ernest was the owner/manager of The Mighty Haag Shows" and Ray was working for him. In 1917, Ray was in Shrevesport, Louisiana, the base for the Haag shows, married to wife Fredda Rayland, and expecting a child, daughter Bertha, born that same year.

When the 1920 Census rolled around, Henry and Clara were still in Fulton County. Herny, aged 51, had his own plumbing business. Clara, aged 52, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were Grace, aged 19, Edith, aged 17, and Earnest, aged 13.

There was a rough patch ahead for the family. In 1927, Clara died at age 60. The following year, son Carl died in 1928 at age 30, and in 1929, Henry died at age 61. The three of them were laid to rest next to one another, and when Henry's brother Ernest died in 1935, he joined them, his large stone bearing the information regarding his circus endeavors.
